This was the beginning. Scattered ran its first ever series of workshops at Kingsdale Elementary School — bringing our approach to mindfulness and self-expression to a younger audience for the very first time.
We hosted 10 workshops for students in grades 4 to 6. Each session was designed to be simple, engaging, and age-appropriate.
Every workshop started with a guided meditation. We used easy visualizations and deep breathing to help students slow down and tune into how they were feeling. No pressure. No judgment. Just a quiet moment to check in with themselves.
Once the students felt calm and settled, we moved into the main activity: automatic poetry writing. The instructions were simple — let your thoughts flow onto the page. Don’t worry about grammar. Don’t worry about getting it right. Just write.
The results were extraordinary. The poetry these young students created was filled with raw emotion, vivid imagery, and honest reflection. It was clear that even at a young age, they had a natural ability to use words to express what was going on inside.
Teachers were amazed. Many said they had never seen their students so engaged and introspective. Students shared that the exercises helped them feel more calm and focused — and opened up conversations about mental wellness and self-compassion.
For Scattered, it was a powerful reminder of why this work matters. And it inspired us to keep building programs designed specifically for elementary-aged students.
